Fishing in Costa Rica

With beautiful weather, unspoiled nature, and some of the friendliest people on the planet, Costa Rica is truly a paradise for adventure vacations. One of the most popular past-times in this jewel of a nation is fishing.

Costa Rica is blessed with two coasts on the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea, hundreds of pristine rivers, dozens of lakes, and a government dedicated to preserving the natural heritage in the country. All of these factors come together to make Costa Rica a true angler’s paradise.

Whether casting for gamefish while onshore or heading out to deeper waters to pursue bigger trophies, Costa Rica is a global capital for unparalleled fishing opportunities. Ideal for first-time anglers and experienced fishermen alike, Costa Rica’s weather, wind, currents, and thriving biosphere mean the waters are always teeming with fish.

The land and waters of Costa Rica are so unspoiled that it is possible to enjoy quality fishing even at the capital of San Jose, an excellent day trip opportunity. Beyond the capital, here are some of the top fishing spots in the country:

Quepos

This small town near the Manuel Antonio National Park is a great place to base a fishing vacation. On offer in the nearby waters are sportfish like wahoo, dorado, tuna, roosterfish, sailfish, snapper, and marlin.

Dominical

Also on the Pacific Coast is the picturesque town of Dominical. Known for being a mecca for surfing enthusiasts, the village lies right on the beach with a gorgeous backdrop of verdant jungle. In Dominical, excellent fishing opportunities abound right from the beach, or head out to deeper waters to pursue Cubera snapper, jack crevalle, needlefish, wahoo, dorado, marlin, tuna, and roosterfish.

Manuel Antonio and Dominical also have great rivers for spin casting and fly fishing, perfect spots for landing snook and machaca.

Endless Olas

A premiere surf camp in Dominical on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, Endless Olas offers detailed one-on-one instruction from experienced local coaches to help anyone surf. Endless Olas features wave mechanics taught in the safety of a swimming pool followed by videotaped post-surf analysis to improve every surfer’s technique and style.
