Costa Rica in March: Weather, Places to Visit, Things to Do

Known for its diverse landscapes, Costa Rica is one of the most bio-diverse places on the planet, home to more than 900 different bird species and a vast cornucopia of plants and animals.

One of the best times to visit Costa Rica is during the month of March. While temperatures can still be quite cold in North America in March, Costa Rica enjoys plenty of warm sunshine and delightfully cool breezes. March falls during the “dry season” when it rarely rains and humidity is quite low. Depending on where you go, daytime highs in March range from 80-88° F (27-31° C).

Depending on the calendar, Easter sometimes falls during the month of March. As the most important religious holiday, Easter and the week beforehand include lots of processions, parades, and festivities, with every town and village hosting their own unique take on Easter. And even when Easter doesn’t occur in March, there are plenty of festivals and local fairs to enjoy across Costa Rica.

The weather in March is especially fantastic on the Pacific Coast in western Costa Rica. A top destination in the area is the Manuel Antonio National Park, famous for its beaches, surf spots, waterfalls, and density of wildlife.

Indeed, many people come to this area precisely because of the great surfing opportunities. A number of beaches in the area, including the mouth of the Quepos River, the island of Isla Damas, and the village of Dominical, offer some of the best surfing in the world. A combination of steady swells, big breaks, and long runs make this area of Costa Rica a surfing mecca.
