December is one of the most popular times of the year to visit Costa Rica, and with good reason. The weather is warm, the sun is shining, and there are plenty of exciting activities to enjoy alongside traditional holiday celebrations.
Situated close to the equator, Costa Rica has two different seasons, known locally as the dry season and the green season. December is a transition month, and the early part of December is when the dry season begins, long days filled with glorious sunshine. During El Nino/La Nina years, however, the green season can extend until the middle of the month.
December is also the “coldest” month of the year, but in countries like Costa Rica, that term is relative. Look for breezes to begin freshening towards the end of the year with the onset of what locals call los vientos de Navidad(the Christmas winds).
December Holidays in Costa Rica
The first week of December is set aside for the Festival de la luz, or the Festival of Lights, particularly popular in the capital San Jose.
December 8 is Dia de la Negrita, a special Catholic holiday involving processionals through the streets to honor Mary, the mother of Jesus.
In Costa Rica, most families gather together on December 24 to enjoy traditional celebrations of Christmas. These family dinners feature special foods like tamales and rice pudding, staying up until past midnight to herald the birth of Jesus with an exchange of gifts. While many restaurants will stay open on December 24-25, most other businesses will be closed.
As in most other countries, the last day of the year (December 31) is a time for food, festivities, fun, and fireworks as Costa Rica rings in the New Year.
